Dharamshala & McLeodganj: Where Tibet Meets the Himalayas
Two Towns, Two Worlds
Dharamshala and McLeodganj sit stacked on the southern slopes of the Dhauladhar range in Himachal Pradesh. Dharamshala — the "lower town" — is a bustling Indian hill station with markets, government offices, and the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium (possibly the most scenic cricket ground in the world). McLeodganj — 9 km uphill — is a different universe: the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, home to the Dalai Lama, and a vibrant fusion of Tibetan, Indian, and Western cultures.
Together, they offer something no other destination in Himachal can match: spiritual depth, cultural richness, and easy access to serious Himalayan treks.

Tsuglagkhang Complex — The Dalai Lama's Temple
The heart of McLeodganj is the Tsuglagkhang Complex, which houses the Dalai Lama's residence, the main Tibetan temple, and the Tibet Museum. The temple is open to all visitors and houses a golden Buddha statue and walls lined with thangka paintings.
When to visit: Morning prayers (6:00-7:00 AM) are a deeply moving experience. The Dalai Lama occasionally gives public teachings — check the official schedule at dalailama.com.
Tibet Museum: Chronicles the history of the Tibetan exile through photographs, video testimonials, and artifacts. Free entry. Allow 1-2 hours.
Triund Trek — The Gateway Trek
Distance: 9 km from McLeodganj | Altitude: 2,850m | Time: 4-5 hours
Triund is arguably the most popular overnight trek in Himachal Pradesh, and for good reason. The trail is well-marked, the views are spectacular, and the sunrise over the Dhauladhar range from the Triund ridge is one of those moments that makes you understand why people climb mountains.
The trail: Starts from Galu Devi Temple (or Dharamkot, slightly shorter). First 6 km is a gradual ascent through oak and rhododendron forest. The last 3 km steepens significantly — the "22 curves" section is a proper workout. The ridge at the top is flat enough for camping.
Permits: Required from the Forest Department office in McLeodganj. Limited to 200 people per day to protect the fragile alpine meadow.
