First Time in Himachal Pradesh? 20 Tips That Will Save Your Trip
# First Time in Himachal Pradesh? 20 Tips That Will Save Your Trip
Before You Go
1. Choose your season wisely. March-June is ideal for most destinations. July-August brings monsoon (landslides on many routes). September-November is crystal-clear but cold. December-February is snow season — magical but roads can close.
2. Book transport early for peak season (May-June, October). Volvo buses to Manali/Shimla sell out weeks ahead on HRTC or RedBus.
3. Acclimatize gradually. If heading to Spiti (4,000m+), spend at least one night at an intermediate altitude. AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is serious — know the symptoms.
4. Carry cash. ATMs are unreliable beyond major towns. Kaza, Chitkul, and many trekking bases have no ATMs. UPI works in some places but signal can be patchy.
5. Download offline maps. Google Maps works offline if you download the region. Signal disappears for long stretches on the Manali-Leh highway and in Spiti.
Packing Essentials
6. Layer everything. Temperature can swing 25°C in a single day. A t-shirt at noon, a down jacket at midnight.
7. Sunscreen is non-negotiable. SPF 50+ — UV intensity at altitude is brutal. Sunburn at 4,000m happens in 20 minutes.
8. Rain gear year-round. Even in "dry" months, mountain weather is unpredictable. A good rain jacket doubles as a wind layer.
9. Bring medications. Diamox for altitude, electrolytes, basic first aid. Pharmacies are scarce in remote areas.
10. Comfortable walking shoes. Even non-trekkers will walk more than expected. Surfaces are uneven.
On the Road
11. Start early. Mountain roads are best driven in the morning. Afternoon clouds, rain, and traffic make driving harder.
12. Respect the mountains. Landslides happen. Roads close. Flights cancel. Build buffer days into your itinerary.
13. Carry snacks and water. Long drives between towns with nothing open. Especially true on the Manali-Leh route.
14. Don't honk unnecessarily. Mountain silence is precious. Many locals find constant honking deeply irritating.
15. Drive (or be driven) carefully. Mountain roads demand respect. If your driver is going too fast, ask them to slow down. It's your life.
Culture & Etiquette
16. Ask before photographing people. Mountain communities are not tourist attractions. A smile and a question go further than a zoom lens.
17. Don't litter. The mountains have a serious waste problem. Carry your trash out. Better yet, pick up others' trash too.
18. Learn basic greetings. "Namaste" works everywhere. In Spiti/Lahaul, "Julley" is the greeting. Locals appreciate the effort.
19. Respect temple customs. Remove shoes, cover shoulders, don't touch religious objects. Ask your guide if unsure.
20. Try local food. Siddu, dham, thukpa, momos, Kangra tea — Himachali cuisine is a delicious part of the experience. Skip the tourist restaurant pizza.
