Himachali Fruits & Dry Fruits — The Complete Buyer's Guide
# Himachali Fruits & Dry Fruits
Apples — Himachal's Gold
Himachal produces ~25% of India's apples. The apple belt runs from Shimla through Kinnaur, at 1,500-3,000m altitude.
Varieties
Season
August to November. Early August: arrival of the first harvest. September-October: peak season with the best fruit.
Buying Direct
Visit orchards in Narkanda, Kotgarh, Thanedhar, or Kinnaur. Buying from the farmer saves 50-70% vs Delhi market prices and the fruit is 24-48 hours fresher.
Dry Fruits
Kinnauri Dried Apricots
Sun-dried on rooftops in the dry Kinnauri climate. No sulphur, no sugar — just concentrated mountain sweetness. The kernels taste like delicate almonds. Best from: Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul. Price: ₹400-600/kg at source.
Walnuts
Himachali walnuts (Kullu, Kinnaur, Mandi) have thin shells and sweet kernels. The Kagzi variety from Kinnaur is especially prized. Season: September-October. Price: ₹500-800/kg at source.
Chilgoza (Pine Nuts)
One of the world's rarest nuts — hand-collected from wild Pinus gerardiana trees at 2,000-3,000m in Kinnaur. Each pine cone is heated over fire, and the nuts are extracted one by one. Incredibly labour-intensive, which explains the price: ₹3,000-4,000/kg. Buttery, rich, and unlike any other nut.
Wild Himalayan Honey
Collected by traditional beekeepers who place hives in alpine meadows. The multiflora variety (nectar from dozens of wildflower species) has a complex flavour that changes with the season. Price: ₹500-800 per 500g jar.
