Paragliding in Himachal — Bir-Billing, Solang & More
Paragliding in Himachal Pradesh: The Complete Guide
Himachal Pradesh is India's paragliding capital, and for good reason: the thermals generated by the Dhauladhar range, combined with wide valleys for safe landing, create conditions that attract pilots from around the world. if you're a first-time tandem flyer or an experienced pilot, Himachal has a launch site for you.
Bir Billing: The Paragliding Capital of India
Why Bir Billing Is World-Class
Bir Billing hosted the 2015 Paragliding World Cup — the only Indian site to earn that distinction. The launch at Billing (2,400m) and landing at Bir (1,525m) create a 900m altitude drop over 15 km, with the rolling Kangra Valley providing a stunning visual canvas. The thermal conditions (10 AM-4 PM, March-November) allow flights of 15-45 minutes depending on conditions.
The Tandem Flight Experience
You don't need any experience — you'll fly with a certified pilot who handles everything. Here's what happens:
1. Briefing (15 min): Your pilot explains the run, takeoff, and landing
2. Run (5-10 seconds): You run downhill until the canopy lifts — most people are airborne in 3-4 steps
3. Flight (15-45 min): Soaring over tea gardens, monasteries, and rice paddies with the Dhauladhar as your backdrop
4. Acrobatics (optional): Your pilot can perform wing-overs and spirals if requested (and if your stomach agrees)
5. Landing: A gentle run onto the landing field at Bir
Cost: ₹2,500-3,500 for a standard flight; ₹3,500-5,000 with GoPro video package
Other Paragliding Sites in Himachal
Solang Valley, Manali
A shorter flight (5-15 minutes) over the Solang meadows with Rohtang Pass as the backdrop. Good for first-timers who want a gentler introduction. The site is busier and more commercialized than Bir.
Baijnath-Billing Corridor
For experienced pilots, the ridge run from Billing toward Baijnath offers long cross-country flights following the Dhauladhar thermal line. On good days, pilots cover 50+ km.
Dharamshala Ridge
An emerging site with stunning views over the Kangra Valley. Currently less organized than Bir but growing.

Learning to Fly (P1-P2 Certification)
If tandem flights ignite a passion, Bir has several schools offering pilot training:
Schools like Temple Pilots, Nirvana Adventures, and Flynirvana are well-established.
*First-timer tip: Book the first flight of the day (8-9 AM) for the smoothest conditions. Morning air is calm, thermals haven't kicked in yet, and the light for photos is golden. Afternoon flights are longer (stronger thermals) but bumpier.*
