River Rafting in Himachal Pradesh — Where, When & How
River Rafting in Himachal Pradesh: A Complete Adventure Guide
Himachal's rivers — fed by glaciers and monsoon rains — offer some of the best whitewater rafting in Asia. From gentle Grade I floats perfect for families to heart-pounding Grade IV rapids that challenge experienced rafters, the state has a waterway for every thrill level.
The Rivers of Himachal
Beas River (Kullu-Manali)
India's most popular commercial rafting destination. The 14 km stretch from Pirdi to Jhiri offers a perfect mix of exciting rapids and calm stretches with the Kullu Valley's pine-clad mountains as your backdrop.
Sutlej River (Shimla-Tattapani)
A more adventurous option with stronger currents and bigger waves. The stretch near Tattapani combines rafting with hot spring bathing — soak in natural geothermal pools after battling rapids.
Chenab River (Chamba)
Himachal's wild child — remote, powerful, and mostly un-commercialized. Multi-day expedition rafting trips on the Chenab offer genuine wilderness experience through inaccessible gorges.
What to Expect on a Rafting Trip
Pre-Trip
You'll be fitted with a life jacket, helmet, and paddle. Your guide will demonstrate paddle commands (forward, backward, hold, get down). Listen carefully — these commands keep you safe in rapids.
On the Water
Commercial trips are led by certified guides with years of river experience. The raft holds 6-8 passengers plus the guide. Between rapids, you can jump in for a river swim (with life jacket) or simply enjoy the scenery.
After the Experience
Most operators serve hot maggi and chai at the take-out point. The post-rafting high — the combination of adrenaline, cold water, and mountain beauty — is genuinely addictive.

*Adventure tip: If you're staying in Manali and want the best rafting experience, book the early morning (8-9 AM) slot from Pirdi. The river is calmer, the light is spectacular with morning mist rising off the water, and you avoid the midday crowd of 50 rafts on the same stretch.*
