Special Places to Visit in Kalpa — Hidden Gems & Must-See Spots
lesser-known spots of Kalpa: The Kinner Kailash Viewpoint Village
Kalpa sits at 2,960m with front-row seats to the magnificent Kinner Kailash range, but most visitors only scratch the surface of what this ancient Kinnauri village offers.
The Suicide Point Viewpoint
Despite its grim name, this viewpoint above Kalpa offers one of the most dramatic vistas in the Himalayas. Standing at the edge of a 2,000m drop to the Sutlej River gorge below, with the Kinner Kailash Shivling directly ahead, the sense of scale is overwhelming. Dawn is the best time — watch the sacred peak change color from grey to gold to blazing white as the sun rises.
Roghi Village — The Kinnauri Time Capsule
A 3 km walk from Kalpa leads to Roghi, an ancient village that feels frozen in time. Traditional Kinnauri wooden houses with slate roofs, stone-paved paths, and an active community life centered around the ancient temple make Roghi the most authentic village experience in Kinnaur. The apple orchards here are among the oldest in the region, and the village elders still wear the distinctive Kinnauri cap (topi) daily.
The Narayan-Nagini Temple
This 800-year-old temple complex in Kalpa features some of the finest wooden architecture in Himachal Pradesh. The carvings on the main entrance depict scenes from Hindu mythology, but also include uniquely Kinnauri motifs — snow leopards, ibex, and mythical creatures from local folklore. The temple is dedicated to both Hindu and Buddhist deities, reflecting Kinnaur's unique cultural fusion.
The Apple Wine Trail
Kalpa and surrounding villages produce some of India's finest fruit wines. The local apple wine, made from the famous Kinnauri apple in traditional wooden barrels, has a crisp, slightly tart flavor. Visit the local production facilities (ask your homestay host) to see the traditional wine-making process and taste varieties made from apple, plum, and the rare wild apricot. These wines are rarely available outside Kinnaur.
Chaka Bridge & Reckong Peo Market
Cross the rickety suspension Chaka bridge over the Sutlej River (an adventure in itself) and visit the district headquarters of Reckong Peo. The main market here is a cultural experience — Kinnauri women in traditional green caps trading pine nuts, dried apricots, and ayurvedic herbs alongside modern goods. The drive between Kalpa and Reckong Peo, along cliff-edge roads with the Sutlej 1,000m below, is one of the most thrilling in India.
*Photography tip: The best view of Kinner Kailash is from the HPTDC Hotel terrace at sunset, when the peak glows orange against a deepening blue sky. For the sacred Shivling rock, you need binoculars or a 300mm+ lens.*
