Special Places to Visit in Mcleodganj — Hidden Gems & Must-See Spots
lesser-known spots of McLeodganj: Beyond the Dalai Lama Temple
McLeodganj draws hundreds of thousands for the Dalai Lama's temple, but look beyond the main square and you'll discover a village with layers of history, spirituality, and natural beauty that remain untouched by tourist crowds.
Naddi Viewpoint
A 3 km walk from McLeodganj's main square leads to Naddi, a quiet village with the most spectacular sunrise viewpoint in the Dharamshala area. From here, the entire Dhauladhar range is laid out before you — from the ice-capped Mun Peak (4,610m) in the left to the dramatic Indrahar Pass (4,342m) on the right. Arrive before dawn and watch the peaks turn from grey to pink to blazing white. There's a small chai shop at the viewpoint — possibly the most scenic tea stall in India.
The Tibetan Cooking Trail
McLeodganj's narrow lanes hide tiny kitchens where Tibetan families prepare food using techniques brought from Lhasa in 1959. Several families offer informal cooking lessons — learn to make momos (the 18-pleat technique takes years to master), thukpa, and tingmo. The experience is as much cultural as culinary — cooking with Tibetan grandmothers who share stories of old Lhasa while kneading dough is remarkable.
St. John in the Wilderness
This neo-Gothic stone church, built in 1852, sits in a dark deodar forest below McLeodganj. Its stained glass windows, memorial plaques for British officers, and atmospheric graveyard (including the tomb of Lord Elgin, Viceroy of India) make it a hauntingly beautiful place. The 1905 earthquake cracked its walls but it survived, and the damage marks are still visible — silent witnesses to one of India's most devastating natural disasters.
The Tibetan Library (LTWA)
The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is one of the world's most important repositories of Tibetan literature and art. Beyond the main exhibition, the library offers short courses in Tibetan language, Buddhist philosophy, and thangka painting. The building itself, with its traditional Tibetan architecture and peaceful garden, is a sanctuary of calm in often-busy McLeodganj.
Dharamkot Forest Trail
Walk 30 minutes uphill from McLeodganj to reach Dharamkot, a hilltop village surrounded by deodar forest. The trail passes through a fairy-tale forest with moss-covered boulders, wildflowers, and langur monkeys. Dharamkot itself is a community of yoga practitioners, artists, and long-term travelers — the vibe here is quieter and more contemplative than McLeodganj. Several cafes in Dharamkot serve organic meals with panoramic mountain views.
*Spiritual itinerary: Morning kora walk around the Tsuglagkhang (7 AM, walk clockwise with the prayer wheels), meditation session at Tushita Meditation Centre (10 AM), vegetarian lunch at Lung Ta, afternoon at the Tibetan Library, sunset from Naddi.*
