Starting from Chandigarh — India's "City Beautiful" — this expedition climbs steadily from the plains into the mountains, pausing at Manali before pushing over the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass into Spiti. The contrast is the point: you leave a planned grid city and arrive, two days later, in a valley where the nearest traffic light is 250 km away. Between those extremes lies some of the most dramatic driving in the Himalayas — river crossings, switchbacks above 4,000 metres, and views that would make a screensaver designer weep. The itinerary covers the essential Spiti circuit with enough flexibility for chai breaks at monastery tea stalls.
