Time your Shimla visit for the Summer Festival — four days in late May/early June when the Ridge becomes a performance stage, local artists display Pahari miniature paintings in the Gaiety Theatre, and the town buzzes with a cultural energy that the regular tourist season doesn't have. The festival includes Himachali folk music (the naati dance is hypnotic — a slow-motion chain dance that can include 200 people), a handicraft fair, flower shows, and food stalls serving Himachali dishes that the Mall Road restaurants don't bother with. Beyond the festival: the Toy Train, the Viceregal Lodge, and the Ridge walks that are best at dusk when the crowds thin and the lights of the valley below start flickering on.
