Winter in Himachal Pradesh — Where to Find Snow, What to Expect
# Winter in Himachal Pradesh
When Does It Snow?
Best Snow Destinations
For Easy Snow: Shimla & Kufri
Just 7-8 hours from Delhi. Kufri (16 km from Shimla) gets more reliable snowfall. Best in January. Stay in a heritage hotel with a fireplace, walk through snow-dusted colonial streets, and drink unlimited hot chocolate.
For Snow Sports: Manali & Solang Valley
Solang Valley has India's best accessible snow sports — skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing. The gondola runs in winter. Manali town itself gets moderate snow. Stay in Old Manali for the best atmosphere.
For Extreme Winter: Spiti Valley
-30°C. Frozen waterfalls. Snow leopard tracking. The frozen river trek. This is for the dedicated winter traveler. Access only from Shimla side (via Kinnaur). Homestays are warm and welcoming.
For Snowfall + History: Dalhousie
Quieter and less commercial than Shimla. The colonial-era architecture looks magical under snow. The road to Khajjiar is often snow-covered. Much less crowded than Shimla/Manali.
Road Safety in Winter
1. Check BRO road status before departing (Twitter: @BaborRoads)
2. Carry chains for your vehicle above 2,500m
3. Start drives early — snow melts and refreezes, making roads icy after dark
4. Don't drive at night on mountain roads in winter. Ever.
5. Fill fuel at every opportunity — petrol pumps close early in winter
