Arrive at Bagdogra airport and drive to Gangtok (125 km, 4.5 hours), the capital of Sikkim. The road climbs through tea gardens and tropical forests to the ridge town perched at 1,650m with stunning views of Kanchenjunga. Evening explore MG Marg — Gangtok's pedestrianised main street — a colourful promenade of cafes, handicraft shops, and street food. Try the local thukpa, momo, and sha phaley (Tibetan fried bread with meat filling).
Drive to Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) at 3,753m — a glacial lake sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. In winter it freezes completely; in spring, the surrounding rhododendrons explode in red and white. Continue to Baba Harbhajan Singh temple — dedicated to an Indian Army soldier whose spirit is believed to still guard the border. The army maintains his quarters with a bed made every night. Return to Gangtok via the Nathula Pass viewpoint (if permits allow — India-China border).

Plan my tripDrive to Pelling (130 km, 5 hours) in West Sikkim. Pelling offers the most dramatic close-up views of Kanchenjunga in all of Sikkim. Afternoon visit the ruins of Rabdentse — Sikkim's second capital, destroyed by the Gurkhas in 1814. The atmospheric ruins sit on a forested ridge with Kanchenjunga floating in the background. Visit the Pemayangtse Monastery — one of the oldest in Sikkim, with a seven-tiered wooden model of the heavenly abode of Guru Rinpoche.

Pre-dawn drive to the Pelling helipad viewpoint for what may be the most spectacular sunrise of your life — the first rays of sun hitting Kanchenjunga's 8,586-metre summit, turning it from grey to pink to blazing gold while the valleys below remain in darkness. After breakfast, drive to Bagdogra airport (145 km, 5 hours) via the scenic Jorethang route. Stop at cardamom plantations and a Lepcha tribal village along the way.
