Drive to Cherrapunji (Sohra) and begin the trek to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village. The descent is 3,500 steps through dense subtropical forest — past waterfalls, natural pools, and single-root bridges. The double-decker bridge is grown from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees by the Khasi tribe — a process that takes 15-20 years. The result is a living, breathing bridge that gets stronger with age. Swim in the natural rock pools below.

Arrive Guwahati and drive to Shillong (100 km, 3 hours). Stop at Umiam Lake — a massive reservoir that appears suddenly around a bend like a Scottish highland loch. Afternoon explore Shillong — the Police Bazaar for local food, Ward's Lake for a peaceful stroll, and Don Bosco Museum for the best introduction to Northeast India's tribal cultures. Evening walk through Shillong's café culture — this is India's rock music capital.
Sightseeing: Umiam Lake, Police Bazaar, Don Bosco Museum
Morning hike back up from Nongriat (the stairs are harder going up!). Visit Mawsmai Cave — a limestone cave system you can walk through with stalactites and narrow passages. Then head to Nohkalikai Falls — India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, cascading into a stunning turquoise pool below. The local legend says a woman named Ka Likai jumped from this cliff — hence the name. Afternoon visit the living root bridge at Mawlynnong, Asia's cleanest village.

Drive to Dawki on the India-Bangladesh border (95 km). The Umngot River at Dawki is famous for its impossibly clear water — boats appear to be floating in mid-air. Take a boat ride on the crystal river and visit the Dawki border. Continue to Shnongpdeng village for camping by the river, cliff jumping, snorkelling, and kayaking. This hidden gem is still relatively unknown and uncrowded compared to its viral Instagram fame.

Plan my tripMorning drive to Laitlum Canyon (means "End of Hills" in Khasi). The viewpoint offers a jaw-dropping panorama of deep valleys disappearing into Bangladesh. A short trek along the canyon rim provides the most dramatic views in all of Meghalaya. Return to Shillong for lunch, pick up local honey and Khasi tribal jewelry from the market, then transfer to Guwahati airport for departure.
