The most dramatic day of the journey. Cross the Baralacha La (4,890m) — a high-altitude pass surrounded by snow even in summer. The road weaves between glacial lakes of surreal blue and vast empty Plains. Stop at Suraj Tal (Lake of the Sun God) at 4,950m — the third-highest lake in India, with water so clear you can see the bottom at 20 feet. Continue through the eerie moonscape of the Lachalung La and descend into the Pang plateau — a surreal flat plain at 4,600m surrounded by eroded sandstone formations. Camp at Pang or Sarchu — the cold is intense (below freezing even in summer) but the stars are the most spectacular you will ever see.
