You cross the Kinnaur Gate tunnel, wind along the Baspa river past Chitkul (India's last village before Tibet), and climb into the high desert of Spiti proper. Accommodation is in clean budget guesthouses and homestays — nothing fancy, but you'll be too busy watching the Milky Way from your window to care. Includes Key Monastery, Kibber village (one of the highest inhabited settlements in Asia), Chandratal lake, and enough starry nights to recalibrate your entire sense of scale.
