Meghalaya Living Root Bridges & Caves Trek

Trek through the wettest place on Earth to find bridges that are alive. Meghalaya's living root bridges are exactly what they sound like: bridges made from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees, trained over decades (sometimes centuries) by the Khasi and Jaintia people to span rivers and gorges. The double-decker root bridge at Nongriat takes 3,500 steps to reach (down and then, mercilessly, back up) — and it's worth every gasping step. This trek also takes you through the caves of Mawsmai (limestone formations lit by headlamp), the crystal-clear pools of Dawki river (boats appear to float in mid-air), and Cherrapunji's living cloud forests where the rain is a companion, not an inconvenience.
