Sikkim: the former Himalayan kingdom where Kanchenjunga — the world's third-highest peak at 8,586m — dominates every horizon. This trip covers Gangtok (the capital, set on a ridge at 1,650m with Kanchenjunga views from every rooftop), the Rumtek Monastery (seat of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, home to one of the richest collections of religious art in the Himalayas), Pelling (where the Kanchenjunga view is so close and so massive it doesn't fit in a camera frame), and Tsomgo Lake at 3,753m (sacred, frozen in winter, ringed by yaks). Sikkim is India's least-visited Himalayan state. The Sikkimese are in no hurry to change that — and when you visit, you'll understand their protectiveness.
