Chicham

Chicham is a small village in the Spiti valley, on the Kibber side of the Spiti river. It sits above a deep gorge that people once crossed only by long detours. Chicham Bridge opened in 2017 at about 13,600 ft. It is widely described as one of the highest bridges in Asia, and it shortens the journey between the villages on either side of the gorge. The bridge is the main sight, with views down the canyon and across to the high ridges. Visitors often stop here on the way to or from Kibber and Key Monastery. The surroundings are classic Spiti high desert, with barley fields, whitewashed houses and little shade. The Kibber area is also known for wildlife sightings, including the Himalayan ibex and snow leopard in winter. Facilities are basic, with a few homestays, so carry cash. Fuel and ATMs are at Kaza, the nearest town. The altitude is high, so get used to it at Kaza first. Summer and early autumn are the best seasons. Winter brings extreme cold and limited road access.
