Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim and the easiest way into the state. The city climbs a ridge above the Ranipool river at about 1,650 m. The climate stays mild through most of the year, and clear mornings give sharp views of Kanchenjunga. In town, Enchey Monastery, the Do-drul Chorten, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and the Himalayan Zoological Park easily fill a day. The pedestrian MG Marg is the place for momos, Sikkimese thukpa and evening walks. Rumtek Monastery is a short drive out. Most travellers use Gangtok as a base for day trips to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir. They also use it for longer circuits to Pelling, Lachung, Yumthang and Zuluk. Spring and autumn give the clearest skies. In the monsoon, landslides can slow road travel in and out of the city.
