Guwahati sits on the south bank of the Brahmaputra, with the Shillong plateau rising behind it. It is the largest city in Northeast India. Most visitors pass through for its airport and railway links, but a day or two here is worth it. Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill is among the most important Shakti shrines in the country. Umananda Temple stands on an island in the river. A boat ride at sunset is the easiest way to see how wide the Brahmaputra is. The Assam State Museum, Sualkuchi silk weaving village and the Assamese thali are other reasons to stay. From here, you can reach Shillong and Cherrapunji, Kaziranga, Manas and the Arunachal road routes by road. The climate is humid subtropical. Winter and early spring are dry and comfortable. June to September is heavy monsoon, with frequent waterlogging.
