Hattu Peak

Hattu Peak is about 3,400 m high, above Narkanda. It is the highest point in the area and one of the best viewpoints on the Hindustan-Tibet road. A small wooden temple, the Hatu Mata temple, stands at the top. Deodar and spruce forest surrounds it. On clear days you can see the Shivalik ridges and the snow ranges of Kinnaur. You can reach the summit by road, so it suits families as well as walkers. The forest trail from Narkanda is a popular short hike. Local legend links the temple with the Ramayana and with Mandodari. Accounts differ, so treat the stories as folklore. The area gets heavy snow in winter. Narkanda then serves as a small ski slope, though the road to the top may be closed.
