Havelock Island

Havelock Island, officially Swaraj Dweep, is part of Ritchie's Archipelago. It lies about 41 km northeast of Port Blair. It is the main base for beach holidays in the islands. Radhanagar Beach is on the west coast, and Elephant Beach is good for snorkelling. The island also has the best scuba diving, including courses for beginners. A long road runs past villages, resorts and cafes, and most people get around on rented scooters. Sunsets at Radhanagar and kayaking through mangroves add variety. There are forest trails for quieter walks. Government ferries from Port Blair take roughly three to four hours. Private catamarans take about two hours. Bad weather can cancel services, so keep a spare day before an onward flight. Book ferries and rooms early from December to February. Cash and mobile signal can be limited, so carry enough rupees for several days. Most travellers spend two or three nights here, often with Neil Island.
