For most travellers, Kashmir means the Kashmir Valley in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is an oval basin between the Great Himalaya and the Pir Panjal range, drained by the Jhelum. Srinagar is the hub, with Dal Lake, houseboats, shikara rides and Mughal gardens such as Shalimar and Nishat. From there, day trips and short stays reach Gulmarg for skiing and meadows. You can also visit Pahalgam for the Lidder river and treks, and Sonmarg on the road to Ladakh. Spring brings tulips and blossom. Summer is mild. In autumn the chinar leaves turn red and gold. Winter is the season for Gulmarg and snow. The region is also known for pashmina, papier-mache, walnut wood carving, saffron and kahwa tea. Plan at least five days to see the main stops without rushing. Ground conditions and travel advisories change, so check current guidance before booking. Expect heavy security checks. Road links to Jammu and Ladakh can close after snow or landslides.
