Kasol

Kasol is a hamlet on the banks of the Parvati river, at about 1,640 m. It lies between Bhuntar and Manikaran, around 30 km from Bhuntar and 36 km from Kullu. It is the best-known backpacker base in Himachal. It has riverside cafes, guesthouses and a lively international crowd, and people nickname it Mini Israel. Most visitors use it as a base for the Kheerganga trek from Barshaini. They also take day trips to Malana, Tosh and Chalal, and visit the Manikaran gurdwara and hot springs, about 3.5 km away. Walking through pine forest along the river is the main pleasure. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Summer is busy, and the monsoon brings landslides on the valley road. Winter is cold and quieter, with snow at higher villages. Plan two or three nights, and book ahead for May, June and holiday weekends. Cash is useful because ATMs run short. Local drug laws are enforced.
