Kaza

Kaza is the subdivisional headquarters of Spiti and its largest town. It stands on the banks of the Spiti river, at well over 3,600 m. It has the valley's main market, offices, fuel, a bank and the widest choice of homestays and hotels. That makes it the natural base for exploring the high desert. From here, day trips reach Key Monastery, Kibber, Chicham Bridge, Langza, Komic and Hikkim. Longer drives lead to Dhankar, Tabo and Pin valley. The Manali to Kaza road goes via Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass. It is usually open from about late May or June until October or early November. The Shimla and Kinnaur route stays open most of the winter, with snow and ice risk near Nako. Fuel and cash are limited and ATMs can fail, so fill up and carry cash. Spend at least two nights here to acclimatise.
