Key

Key, also spelled Kye or Ki, is a Spiti village under Key Monastery. This Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist gompa stands at about 4,166 m on a hilltop above the Spiti river. It is the largest monastery in the valley and a training centre for lamas. It is dedicated to Lochen Tulku, seen as a reincarnation of the translator Rinchen Zangpo. The whitewashed buildings climb the hill in tiers, with prayer halls, murals and a small museum. The views along the Spiti river and the barren peaks are among the most photographed in the Himalaya. It lies about 12 km north of Kaza and 210 km from Manali by road. Morning prayers (puja) are the best time to visit. Dress modestly and take off your shoes where asked. The climb inside the monastery can be tiring at this altitude, so go slowly and carry water. Key is normally combined with Kibber, Chicham and Langza.
