Komic

Komic is a small village in Spiti with about 130 people. It is at roughly 4,500 to 4,600 m. It is billed as one of the highest villages in the world that you can reach by road. The Tangyud (Tanggyud) Gompa is the main sight. This monastery is built in a fort-like style. The hills around are stark and wind-scoured, with fossil-rich rock. People usually visit with nearby Langza and Hikkim on a loop from Kaza, under 20 km away. You can do it in a long half-day. Sources differ on the exact altitude, so treat the figure as approximate. Facilities are minimal, just homestays and basic tea stops. Nights are very cold even in summer. Acclimatise in Kaza for at least a day before you come, drink plenty of water and move slowly. The road is generally open from late spring to early winter. Heavy snow can close it in winter.
