Kufri

Kufri is a small resort on the Hindustan-Tibet road, about 12 km from Shimla. It is one of the most popular short trips from the state capital. It is known for winter snow, tobogganing and horse rides toward the Mahasu Peak viewpoint. The Himalayan Nature Park has deodar forest, enclosures for local wildlife and walking paths. Altitude figures vary by source, commonly between about 2,300 and 2,700 m, so treat them as approximate. In winter the road can be crowded and slippery. You may need chains or a snow-ready vehicle during heavy snowfall. Outside the snow season, the draw is the views, forests and quieter walks. Stalls and pony operators can be pushy, so agree prices in advance. Kufri is best as a half-day trip from Shimla, often combined with Hassan Valley, Chail or Narkanda. Early mornings are clearer. Weekends and school holidays are the busiest.
