Leh, at about 3,500 m, is the main town of Ladakh, overlooked by the Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa. It is the base for visits to Pangong, Nubra and the Indus-valley monasteries, and the start of the legendary Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways.
