Naggar

Naggar sits on the left bank of the Beas, between Kullu and Manali. It was the capital of the Kullu kingdom for centuries. Its stone-and-timber castle was built about 500 years ago. Today it is a heritage hotel with a small museum and views over the valley. Nearby are the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery and the Roerich estate at Urusvati. You can also see the Tripura Sundari and Murlidhar temples, with their wood carving. Apple orchards and forest surround the village. The walks to Jana waterfall and Rumsu village are short and rewarding. Naggar works well as a base for two or three nights. Spring is lovely when the valley flowers bloom, and so is autumn when the apples ripen. It is also the start of the high trek over the Chandrakhani Pass to Malana. It is quieter than Manali all year, though the roads in and out are narrow and steep.
