Narkanda

Narkanda is a town in Shimla district, 60 km from Shimla. It is at roughly 2,710 m on National Highway 5, the old Hindustan-Tibet Road. Fir forest surrounds it. The apple orchards of Kotgarh and Thanedhar are close by, where the orchard industry of Himachal began. A short drive leads to Hatu Peak, at over 3,000 m. There is a wooden temple there, with wide views over the Himalayan ranges. In winter, people use the slopes around Narkanda for skiing and playing in the snow. In summer the area is cool and green, and good for walks. It is also a handy halt on the way to Rampur, Sarahan and Kinnaur. It gives a break from the heat on the road from Shimla. Facilities are basic, with a small bazaar, simple hotels and homestays, so book ahead in winter. Roads can be icy after heavy snow. The route through the Sutlej gorge carries on beyond Narkanda.
