Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass is a high mountain pass at about 3,980 m, on the eastern end of the Pir Panjal range. It is around 51 km from Manali. For centuries it was the main route from the Kullu valley into Lahaul and Spiti. The Atal Tunnel opened in October 2020. Since then most traffic to Lahaul and beyond uses the tunnel. The pass is now mainly a day trip for snow, views and photographs. It is normally open from around May to November, depending on snow. It closes after heavy snowfall. Vehicles going beyond Gulaba toward the pass need an online permit from the Himachal Pradesh government. Permits are issued against a daily quota, so check current rules and book ahead. The altitude can cause headache and breathlessness, so go slowly. Carry warm and waterproof layers. Start early, as cloud and weather build up by afternoon. Services at the top are basic.
