Sangla

Sangla is the largest village in the Baspa valley of Kinnaur, at roughly 2,680 m. Apple orchards, fields and the snow peaks of the Kinner Kailash range surround it. The Kamru Fort, with its Badrinath temple and wooden architecture, is a short walk from the village. The Bering Nag temple and the local wooden houses are also worth seeing. The main road goes on up the valley through Rakcham to Chitkul, the last village before the Tibet border. Sangla is a calmer base than Kalpa for walking among orchards and visiting nearby villages. Homestays and small hotels are available, but ATMs are limited, so carry cash. Spring has blossom and summer is mild. Autumn colours and the apple harvest make September and October a good time to visit. Winter brings heavy snow and cold, and roads into the valley can close. It usually takes a full day to get here from Shimla.
