Sarahan

Sarahan stands above the Sutlej, about 170 km from Shimla. It was the summer capital of the Bushahr state, and Rampur was the winter capital. The main landmark is the Bhimakali temple. It is dedicated to the mother goddess who watched over the Bushahr rulers, and is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas. The complex has tiered wooden and stone buildings that mix Hindu and Buddhist styles. The Srikhand Mahadev peak rises behind the village, and clear mornings give excellent views. Sarahan also has a small bird sanctuary. A short walk leads to the pheasant breeding centre, where the Himalayan monal and other pheasants are kept. It is a quiet town with a few hotels. Visitors usually stay one night on the route between Shimla and Kinnaur. Dress modestly at the temple. It has rules about photography and leather items inside the compound. Winters are cold and the town may get snow.
