Spillo is a small village in the Pooh tehsil of Kinnaur district. It is strung along the Hindustan-Tibet Road above the Sutlej, roughly 30 km east of Reckong Peo. Few travellers plan a trip around it. But it is a familiar halt on the Kalpa to Pooh to Nako stretch of the Kinnaur-Spiti circuit. Here the gorge gets narrow and the road is cut into steep, dry slopes. The green apple country around Kalpa gives way to the bare, windy land that leads to Spiti. It is good for a short tea or meal stop and a look at the river far below. It also lets your body adjust to the rising height before Nako and Tabo. This part of the road often has landslides and is slow after rain or snow. Allow plenty of time between Kalpa and Nako. Facilities are basic, so fill up fuel and carry cash and water from Reckong Peo.
