Tabo, on the Spiti river at about 3,280 m, is famed for its monastery founded in 996 CE, whose mud-walled temples hold exquisite ancient murals and stucco. Revered by the Dalai Lama, it is one of the oldest continuously functioning Buddhist enclaves in the Himalaya.
