Both options work well. Self-drive (car or motorcycle) gives you flexibility to stop at viewpoints and adjust pace — ideal for first-timers and families. HRTC and Volvo buses run regular schedules and are the budget option. For high-altitude segments (if you extend to Spiti or Leh), SUV or 4WD vehicles are strongly recommended.
