Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg: 5-Day Kashmir Route
# Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg: 5-Day Kashmir Route
The Kashmir valley's four best-known bases are close enough to link in five days: Srinagar for lakes and gardens, Gulmarg for meadows and the gondola, Pahalgam for the Lidder river and pine valleys, and Sonamarg for glacier views on the road to Ladakh. This route keeps driving manageable and leaves room to adjust for weather and current conditions.
Route at a glance
Distances are approximate and come from tourism and reference sources. Real driving times depend on traffic, roadworks and weather.
|---|---|---|
Plan about two hours to Gulmarg, two and a half to three to Pahalgam, and two to three to Sonamarg, allowing for slow stretches. Altitude is mild for most of the trip. The exception is the Gulmarg gondola, whose upper stage climbs toward roughly 4,000 m.
Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar
Settle in on or near Dal Lake. If you land early, visit the Mughal gardens, including Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, which sit on the lake shore against the Zabarwan hills. Finish with a shikara ride when the light is softer. A houseboat stay is a classic option; check that the boat is registered. Srinagar is a flat valley floor, so no acclimatisation is needed. Chinar trees turn gold roughly from late September to November, and October is typically the peak.
Day 2: Gulmarg day trip
Leave early for Gulmarg, about 56 km away, with the last 12 km or so a steady climb through forest. Gulmarg is a meadow bowl at about 2,650 m, and the Gulmarg Gondola is a two-stage ropeway built by a French firm. The first stage runs to Kongdori and the second climbs toward a shoulder of Apharwat Peak, which rises to about 4,267 m. Operation depends on wind and snow, and queues can be long in season, so book through the official channel and keep a buffer in your plan.
The upper station is cold and exposed even in summer, so wear a proper jacket. If you have breathing or heart trouble, ask a doctor before going up. Return to Srinagar for the night, or stay in Gulmarg if you want a morning on the meadows. Skiing generally runs from around December to late March.
Day 3: Sonamarg day trip
Drive roughly 80-84 km to Sonamarg on NH-1, the road to Zoji La and Ladakh. The valley has meadows, the Sindh river and a trail to Thajiwas Glacier. The Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel, a road tunnel of about 6.4 km opened in January 2025, was built to give all-weather access, replacing a stretch that used to be blocked by snow and avalanches. Ponies are available for the Thajiwas walk in summer; keep to marked paths and follow local guidance, as two glacier collapses in 2024 killed two people. Return to Srinagar by evening.
Day 4: Srinagar to Pahalgam
Drive about 90-95 km along the Anantnag road to Pahalgam, a village on the Lidder river at roughly 2,200 m. If you travel in late October or early November, the saffron fields around Pampore on this road are typically in bloom. Spend the afternoon by the river and visit Betaab Valley if it is open. Aru Valley and Chandanwari, about 16 km from Pahalgam and the start of the Amarnath Yatra, are the other usual stops. The Yatra runs in July and August and fills the town, so avoid those weeks unless you are travelling for the pilgrimage.
Check access carefully. After the attack at Baisaran on 22 April 2025, authorities closed many tourist spots in the valley and reopened them in stages from June 2025. Betaab Valley and Aru Valley were among those reopened, but Baisaran's status was unclear in the reports we found. Confirm which sites are open with your hotel or J&K Tourism before you go, and respect any restrictions.
Day 5: Pahalgam to Srinagar and departure
Drive back to Srinagar (allow about three hours plus buffer) and head to the airport or onward. If your flight is in the evening, there is time for a last visit to a bakery or the old city. Do not schedule a tight connection.
Best season
As of late October, you are in the autumn window, so pack layers and watch the forecast for early snow in higher areas.

Practical tips
1. Use a local, registered taxi for day trips; it avoids parking and route confusion.
2. Do not plan back-to-back long days. Valley roads can slow without warning.
3. Pack warm layers even in summer, and rain cover in July and August.
4. Carry ID everywhere; checkpoints are routine.
5. Agree rates for shikaras, ponies and taxis before you start.
