Himachal Apple Varieties – From Royal Delicious to Ambri
Himachal Pradesh – India's Apple Bowl
Himachal Pradesh contributes approximately 25-30% of India's total apple production. The cool climate, high altitude (5,000–9,000 feet), and well-drained soil of districts like Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Mandi create ideal growing conditions.
Major Apple Varieties
1. Royal Delicious
The most widely grown variety in Himachal. Deep red skin with a mildly sweet, aromatic flavour. Harvest: August–September.
2. Golden Delicious
Yellow-green skin with a honey-sweet taste. Excellent for salads and fresh consumption. Harvest: September–October.
3. Red Chief (Red Delicious)
Elongated shape with dark red striped skin. Sweeter than Royal Delicious with a satisfying crunch. Harvest: September.
4. Granny Smith
Tart, green apples perfect for baking and cooking. Grown primarily in Kinnaur. Harvest: October–November.
5. Ambri (Kashmiri)
A traditional Indian variety with pinkish-red skin and distinctive aroma. Grown in higher altitudes of Kinnaur and Lahaul. Harvest: October–November.
6. Fuji
A newer introduction with a super-sweet flavour and extended shelf life. Gaining popularity in Shimla and Kullu orchards. Harvest: October.
